Dr. Hannah Fry

Hannah’s mathematical expertise has led to the development of several BBC documentaries including Climate Change By Numbers, Calculating Ada: The Countess of Computing (BBC4) and Horizon: How to Find Love Online (BBC2), City in the Sky (BBC2) and The Joy of Data (BBC4). Hannah regularly appears on radio in the UK including on her long running show The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry (BBC R4) and Music By Numbers (BBC R1). Online, her YouTube videos have clocked up over 5 million views, including her popular TED talk, ’The Mathematics of Love’.

Dr Hannah Fry is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL where she studies patterns in human behaviour. Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism.

Hannah delivers fascinating talks across the country successfully motivating interest in maths among her audience and has inspired younger generations into celebrating women in mathematics. Hannah also takes unusual examples of how data and models are used in everything from locating serial killers, the analysis of fertility in cows, and predicting malarial water sources. She uses these illustrations to examine how data is collected, used, how reliable it is and what its limitations are.
